Darriel Ruth Merritt Christoffel, 89, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013. She was born in Elizabethton, TN, the eldest daughter of the late Earl Hunter Merritt and Willie Greene Merritt. Darriel attended Milligan College and East Tennessee State, and was employed as a chemist during World War II at American Bemberg Nylon Plant in Elizabethton.
Darriel was married to Lewis Wilson Christoffel for 63 years prior to his death in 2007. She lived in the Asheville area for 58 years, where she and Lewis raised their family. Lewis worked as an engineer for American Enka, and Darriel was a homemaker. She was a member of Skyland Methodist Church in Skyland, NC.
Darriel is survived by her daughter, Sandra Edgerton and husband, Barry, of Winston-Salem, NC; her son, Lewis Wilson Christoffel, Jr. of Arden; grandchildren, Charlene Edgerton of Raleigh, NC, Savannah Christoffel of Winston-Salem, NC and Indiana Christoffel of Arden, NC; sisters, Clara Earline Taylor, the widow of William Taylor, of Pensacola, FL and Phyllis J. Merritt of Valparaiso, FL; dear family friend, Anne Folsom, also of Valparaiso, FL; nephews and niece, William Taylor, Stephen Taylor and wife, Wanda; Jeanne Taylor Orach and her husband, Nick, all of Pensacola, FL and Jeffrey Taylor, and his wife, Sandy, of Sarasota, FL.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care and compassion shown to them and their mother by Crescent View Retirement and Four Seasons Hospice.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, February 2nd at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Candler.
