Waynesville, Darwin D. Jordan, age 81, of Will Hyatt Road, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 at his home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Era Hooker Jordan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Blanca Pidalla Jordan, who died in 1989, and two children, Yevette and Anthony Jordan. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of American Legion Post 47. Darwin was a 1947 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and retired as manager from A&P after 45 years. He was a former member of the Hazelwood Boosters and a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church. Darwin loved mowing the lawn and working on antique clocks. He is survived by his wife of eight years, Flora Dills Jordan; three stepsons, Steve Dills and friend, Janet, of Waynesville, Danny Smith and his wife, Brandi, of Canton, and Joey Smith and friend, Tina, also of Canton; two stepdaughters, Susan Smith of Canton and Patti Singleton and her husband, Alan, of Fair Play, South Carolina; two cousins, DuRell Herndon and Alonzo Hooker, both of Charleston, South Carolina; ten grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 16, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Patrick J. Womack and Reverend Larry Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with military honors conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. Stepsons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hazelwood Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 67, Hazelwood, NC 28738.
