"1934-2016" Canton - David Lowell Anderson passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 after a period of declining health. He was a son of the late John Alden "Red" and Mary Justice Anderson. David resided in Canton all his life except for a European post in The United States Army. He was a machinist by trade and retired from Dayco Southern. His horses were part of the foundation stock for the Appalachian Single-Foot Horse Association. David was an accomplished jewelry craftsman who taught several classes at Haywood Technical College in lapidary technique and an avid fisherman. He was best known as a world-class, amateur fast-pitch softball pitcher and played for several teams in Western North Carolina as well as during his army service. David was inducted into the North Carolina Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1986 and The Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He also received an honorary induction into the South Carolina Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 2002. After retiring from the sport, Dave coached several young pitchers. He is survived by wife of 58 years, Janice Earley Anderson; a son, John Anderson and daughter-in-law, Renee; and one granddaughter, Amber. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, 2016 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Canton with the Reverend Christopher Willett officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
