David Baker

January 20, 1953 — December 3, 2015

Clyde, David L. Baker, 62, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Memorial Campus/St. Joseph Hospital. A native of Caldwell County, he was the son of Gwendolyn Holder Jenkins and the late Clyde Elmo Baker and was also preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Baker. David spent four years serving in the US Air Force before joining the North Carolina National Guard in 1980. He proudly served in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom, retiring as 1st Sergeant of the 211th Military Police Company. David was employed at Champion International for 38 years and was a 45-year member of Antioch Baptist Church where he faithfully served as a deacon and in many other capacities. He taught so many friends and family the true meaning of love and was a man of integrity, selflessness and compassion. His love for others had no boundaries, and he will be forever remembered as an exemplary servant of the Lord and will be greatly missed by family and friends. In addition to his mother, David is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diane Fullbright Baker; his daughters, Krista King and husband, Nicholas, of Hickory and Amy Garner and husband, Ben, of Waynesville; three sisters, Jean Punch, of Savannah, Georgia and Stephanie Lynn and Nicole Womack, both of Hickory; one brother, Bobby Baker and his wife, Linda, of Bessemer City; four grandchildren, Madeline and Lydia King and Josie and Jeb Garner; mother-in-law, Gertrude Fullbright; one brother-in-law, John Fullbright; and one special sister-in-law, Phoebe Burleson and husband, Bruce; as well as many special friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church with Reverend Gary Hearon, Reverend Nicholas King, and Reverend Steve Taylor officiating. Ben Garner will present the eulogy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until time of service.
