David Edwards

May 26, 1919 — October 26, 2010

Waynesville, David Carl Edwards, age 91, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Carl and Mae Swayngim Edwards. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Praytor; one brother, James Edwards; and a grandson, Michael Nanney. David retired at Champion International, after 39 years of service, as Chief of Security. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he was very active on committees, the choir, and a lifetime member of the United Methodist men. David served for 37 years on the Board of Directors for Haywood Electric Membership Corporation and he enjoyed working with his cattle and loved being with friends and family and storytelling. David was a United States Army veteran of World War II where he received a campaign medal with three bronze stars and a purple heart. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Edith Stamey Edwards; two daughters, Patricia Ann Moore and her husband, Sonny, of Waynesville, and Evelyn Lanning of Hendersonville; three grandchildren, Julie Brittain and her husband Patrick, of Boone, Kathleen Lanning of Hendersonville, and Kevin Lanning of King, North Carolina; one great-grandchild, Jacob Brittain; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010 at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Reverend Daniel P. Stiles and the Reverend Dr. J.C. Grose, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. Military Sevices will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Pallbearers will be Bobby and Phillip Edwards, Edward Praytor, Dale McElroy, Kevin Lanning, Ronnie Boydston, Loye Trantham, and Brent Thomason. The family would like to thank Ronnie and Nancy Boydston for their love and care. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (Local Chapter 89), P.O. Box 331, Canton, NC 28716.
