Canton-David T. Henderson-72 of 47 Upward Way, died Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.
He was a native of Haywood County and lived there for most of his life. He was a son of Gladys Cook Henderson of Canton and the late O. T. Henderson and was also preceded in death by a brother, Bobby L. Henderson. He was a retired United States Veteran of the Navy and the Army serving in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War where he served two tours. He was a highly decorated veteran in which he was the recipient of 3 purple hearts, 4 distinguished service metals and 2 bronze stars. After his military service, he worked in civil service with the United States Navy.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Kelli and her husband Dr. James Whipple of Athens, GA, Susie and her husband Richard Fletcher of Brevard, two brothers, Phil Henderson of Canton and Jerry Henderson of Enka, 7 grandchildren, Katie, Grace, Jamie, Ian, Isaac Whipple and Lacie Fletcher and David Cagle, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2002 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes. Burial will follow at Longs Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be conducted by representatives from Ft. Bragg and the VFW Post #5202 and the American Legion Post #47.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC 28716.
