Canton-David Neal Hipps, age 56, of 256 Camp Rock Road in the Beaverdam community died at his residence, Tuesday, January 25, 2005 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a son of Gladys Mann Hipps of Canton and the late Neal Bennett Hipps. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Marvin Lane Hipps. He was a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church and was currently serving as the Governor of the Canton Moose Lodge #515. He was a lifelong member of the D.A.V., and was a United States Army veteran serving in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of nearly 37 years, Estelena Pope Hipps of Canton, two sons, Jason Lee Hipps and Nathan David Hipps, both of Canton, one sister, Kathy Stockton of Candler, two brothers, Marion Bennett Hipps and Eric Lynn Hipps, both of Canton, 6 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2005 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Service. Reverend Naomi King and Reverend Wayne Willett will officiate. Burial will follow in the Beaverdam Community Cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the American Legion and VFW Post #5202. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the residence. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Building, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
