David Edward Masters, age 71, of Poplar Street died Sunday, October 18, 2009, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Kingsport, TN, he was one of ten adopted children to the late John Leroy Masters and Eva Osborne Masters. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Lee Masters and Henry Claude Bailey and a sister, Eva Rebecca Masters. Dave had a distinguished and decorated military career and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force with 22 years of service. Following his military career, he was employed by the VA Medical Center in Oteen in the Outpatient Surgery Department. He was an active member of the Canton Lions Club and served in various offices on the district level. He was elected to the Board of the WNC Lions, Inc. and was a recipient of the Jack Stickley and Melvin Jones Awards. He was a member of the Family Selection Committee for Haywood Habitat for Humanity, and a lifetime member of the VFW and served as past commander of the Canton Post #5198. He was a dedicated member of Canton Central United Methodist Church serving on numerous committees and positions. Dave was a simple man who touched the lives of all he met. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Linda Thompson Snakenberg Masters, a son, David Eric Masters of Bucyrus, OH; a step-son, Robert L. Snakenberg, III of Columbia, SC; four sisters, Sheila Rose Bailey, of Jack, AL, Linda Marie "Suzi" Emmons and her husband, Mike, of Tampa, FL, Sandra Paulette "Sandy" Pettus and her husband, Joe, of Tampa, FL; Robyn Louise Hammock and her husband, Dwayne, of Madisonville, TN; two brothers, John Michael Masters and his wife, Alyce, of Tampa, FL and Steven Alexander Osborne and his wife, Audrey, of Gladstone, VA; a sister-in-law, Margaret Masters, of Tampa, FL; and a grandson, Gage Evan Masters of Mansfield, OH. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at Canton Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Christy officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road with full military honors conducted by a detachment from Shaw Air Force Base. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. At other times the family will be at the Thompson family home, 1006 Dutch Cove Road, Canton. Pallbearers will be Dean Minzenmayer, Ryan Jacobson, Patrick Willis, Kevin Lowery, Fred Trantham, Neal Lipham, Jerry and Jimmy Powell. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Canton Lions Club.
