Deborah Fortner Bumgarner, age 53, of Upper Glady Fork Road, died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at her residence. She was a native of Iredell County, NC and had resided in Buncombe County for the last 32 years and was the daughter of Harry Fortner of Statesville and Martha Gillis Duncan and her husband, Jim, of Hiddnite, NC. Debbie was a dedicated wife and mother and a very active member of Ridgeway Baptist Church, having served in many capacities. Two of her special interests were cooking and being a devoted Atlanta Braves baseball fan. She was a former employee of Buncombe County schools, M.A.H.E.C. and had also served as Administrative Assistant at Pole Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and stepfather, she is survived by her husband of 35 years, Alvin Bumgarner; a daughter, Jamie Bumgarner of Candler; a son, Nick Bumgarner of Candler; two sisters, Cathy Moore of Statesville and Patty Frazier of Hiddnite; two brothers, David Duncan of Hiddnite and Jimmy Duncan of Statesville and a special aunt, Virginia Jenkins, of Statesville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 29, 2006, at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins and Reverend Dennis Thurman officiating. Burial will follow at the Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2006, at the church. Memorials may be made to the ALS Association, The Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603.
