Delia Johnson

Delia Jones Johnson, age 86, went home to our Lord and her family, Wednesday, April 15, 2009. A native of Haywood County (Thickety Community) and long time resident of Buncombe County passed over quietly at Canton Christian Convalescent Center. She was a daughter of the late Herbert "Hub" G. and Addie Lee Henderson Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jess W. Johnson, who passed in 1992; her eldest son, Ted Jones, in 2005; two sisters, Mrs. Flora Brooks and Mrs. Alva Mae Moore; and one brother, Mr. Clifford Jones. In her life, she was wife, mother, homemaker, rivetor on B-29 Bomber aircraft, waitress, textile worker at American Enka Corporation, furniture re-upholster and a daughter caretaker of elderly parents. Dee also had an amazing memory and knew friendships with more people in Buncombe and Haywood Counties than I could ever list. For those who knew her I'm sure she would not want them to grieve…but to remember her well. She is survived in life by two sons, Mr. William "Bill" Jones of Canton and Mr. Jerry Johnson of Candler and their families; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren which were her pride and joy. A brief memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family request a donation be made in her name at the Haywood County Community Kitchen, 98 Pisgah Drive, Canton, NC 28716 or to a charity of one's choice which benefits Haywood County's children. As a depression era survivor she knew hunger and could never in her life stand the thought of a hungry child.
