Della Smathers

Waynesville, Margaret Della Jenkins Smathers, age 79, went home to be with the Lord, on Monday, March 9, 2009 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Parker and Vinnie Virginia Davis Jenkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Kenneth "Penny" Smathers who died October 1984; four sisters, Sally Goforth, Carrie Early, Laura Ruff and Arbie Rathbone and two brothers, Iolet and Clem Jenkins. Della loved nature, she especially enjoyed going to the Blue Ridge Parkway looking at the wildflowers, and visiting Cataloochee. The biggest joy in her life were her great grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Smathers, of Waynesville; three sisters, Nellie Nichols, of Mooresville, NC, Willa "Billie" Moody and Ollie Mae Morgan both of Waynesville; one brother, Swan Jenkins, of Waynesville; one granddaughter, Sherri Brooks and her husband, Kevin and five great grandchildren, Ashley, Alisha, Jonathan, Lydia and Levi Brooks. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009 at North Hazelwood Baptist Church with Brother Kevin Brooks and Reverend James Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of Autumn Care Nursing Home, especially, Kasey Morgan and Daryll Clark for their care and love they gave to Della.
