Dennis Hall

December 20, 1946 — February 25, 2021

Canton

12/20/46 – 2/25/21

Canton - Dennis “Denny” Lee Hall, 74, was escorted home to Heaven by his favorite Angel, his son, Brent on Feb. 25, 2021 after years of battling multiple illnesses.

Denny was a native of Haywood County and a son of the late Edgar Lee Hall Jr. and Doris Aileen Ford Hall.  He was also preceded in death by his precious beloved son, Russell “Brent” Hall; brother, Gary Dale Hall; sister, Patsy Gail Farmer; and half-brother, Hillard Clontz.

Denny served in the United States Navy honorably for 4 years as a Navy Signalman. When his enlistment contract ended, he decided to dedicate his life to protect and serve as a NC State Highway Patrolman in 1968. Over his 30-year career as a Highway Patrolman, he and his loving wife Doris and children were stationed in different western NC counties. He retired from the Highway Patrol after serving faithfully at the rank of First Sergeant. Denny was a man of few words, but in his 74 years of life he made many friends from all over. He was honest with his feelings and words. Those meeting him would know immediately how he would feel about you, but although his exterior was a little rough, he indeed had a soul of a gentle giant. He had a good heart. Denny had a lot of burdens to carry, which he carried quietly.

When he retired, he enjoyed the farm by raising cattle, goats, and chickens. Most of the time people could find him at the Old Stockyard where he enjoyed spending time with the older farmers that he had the upmost respect for. He loved the simple things in life. He and Doris could sit on the porch and overlook the mountains and be perfectly content and happy. He loved going out and checking his cattle, and those of his sons. He didn’t need fine dining as he would tell everyone that Doris was the best of any cook. She made sure he was extremely spoiled with homemade biscuits, sausage and gravy and strong coffee every morning most of the time before the sun peaked through the clouds. Doris was the love of his life. She will tell you the moment she knew he was her forever and that was at Bethel High School where he and his friends where playing basketball, and that was it for her. They were high school sweethearts and married for 57 years. The 30 years he spent on the Highway Patrol; Doris too served. She always made sure his uniform and shoes were perfectly starched and ironed and would be ready for him to put on as he would head out to work.

Denny is survived by his loving wife, Doris Russell Hall of Canton; son, Randall Lee Hall (Trudy Hall); daughter, Tracie Hall Brookshire (Ret. SgtMaj Matthew Brookshire, USMC); daughter-in-law, Tracy Foster Hall; granddaughters, Haylee Ann Hall, Charlee Beth Hall, and Peyton Willis, all of Canton; and his fur babies, Cindy, Princess, Tipper, and Elizabeth who will miss their almost daily plain hamburgers from McDonald’s. He is also survived by Joey McKay who Denny considered like a son as he and Brent grew up together and were best friends.

Services will be private, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation, P.O. Box 854, Waynesville, NC  28786, where his fur babies were adopted.

The family wishes to thank all of those who thought of him, called or visited, and those that were such wonderful friends to him through the years.

The care of Mr. Hall has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes of Canton and an online memorial register is available at “Obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com
