Donald Smith

Waynesville, Donald Dean Smith, age 75, of 127 Dock Ratcliff Road, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2012. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Ben and Polly Ratcliffe Smith and was also preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Pace Smith, who died in 2006. He served in the US Army as a Captain of a Merchant Marine ship. Donald Dean served Haywood County as the local bread route salesman for more than 37 years. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and enjoyed gardening and being with his grandchildren. He is survived by two sons, Allen Smith and his wife, Hope, of Spartanburg, South Carolina and David Smith and his wife, Cindy, of Waynesville; two sisters, Charlotte Parker and Lorena Smith, both of Waynesville; and two grandchildren, Harrison and McKinley Smith. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Elizabeth Chapel with Reverend Michael A. Shuford officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery with military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be Charlie and Zach McGuinness, Seneca and Kenneth Pace, Jr., David Smith and Justin Ferguson. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, P.O.
