Donald Hooper

Waynesville, Dr. Donald Hooper, age 87, passed away at his residence on Thursday, June 25, 2015. Born in Marshall County, Alabama, he was a longtime resident of Florida and had resided in Haywood County for the past 34 years. He was the son of the late Alonzo B. Hooper, Sr. and Oma Colvin Hooper and was also preceded in death by a brother, John F. Hooper and one sister, Maggie Belle Reed. He was a US Army veteran. Donald was a graduate of the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama Medical School. Donald served his residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. Specializing in anesthesiology, he practiced at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida, retiring in 1992. He served as a volunteer at the A.G. Holly Tuberculosis Hospital in Lantana, Florida. Donald was an active member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and was also a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels. Donald is survived by his wife of 64 years, Katie O'Toole Hooper; three daughters, Kathleen Hooper (Scott Cadmus) of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Laura Lynn Hooper of Vermont, and Betsy Ann Hooper (Vicki Carter) of Nashville, Tennessee; a son, the Reverend Larry Donald Hooper (Kathy) of Key West, Florida; and three grandchildren, Matthew Donald Hooper of St. Louis, Missouri, Sarah Hooper of St. Petersburg, Florida and Abigail Hooper of Tampa, Florida. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church in Waynesville, NC with the Reverend Thomas Tout officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church.
