Donald R. Johnson, 74, of Asheville died on July 29, 2010 while in hospice care at the VA Hospital. He was a son of the late Isaac and Rosa Davis Johnson. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie and Frank Johnson and one sister Nolia.
He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He loved playing guitar and singing. He also had a great love of boating and spent many wonderful hours on the James and Warwick Rivers. Don was well known for his great sense of humor; he could always make people laugh.
After serving in US Air Force from 1954-1958, he attended East Carolina University until 1961 when he went to work for Fieldcrest Mills until 1974. He was employed by BASF Corp. from 1974 until his retirement in 1994. Donald enjoyed attending Starnes Cove Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Carolyn M. Johnson, one son, Christopher Johnson and wife Lisa of Hendersonville, one daughter, LaDonna Johnson Pfeffer and husband Steve of Hartfield, VA, three sisters, Genevieve Waddell of Antioch, TN., Muriel Tyler of Little Rock, Ark. and Rosa Schmoll of Bakersfield, CA., two brothers, Tom Johnson of Florence, SC and Robert Johnson, two grandchildren, Evan and Morgan Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00PM on Monday, August 2, 2010 in the Chapel of Faith at Forest Lawn with Bill Higgins officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank Rev. Charlie Sams for his faithfulness in visiting Don throughout his stay in Hospice and ministering to the family during this difficult time.
