Donald Phillips McCracken, age 76, of the Bethel Community died Thursday, September 4, 2008 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jack Phillips and Clara Rogers McCracken. He was also preceded in death by a baby daughter, Elizabeth; two sisters, Patsy Axelrod and Helen Angel. He retired from Champion International in 1993 with 28 years of service. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a member of the church choir, a Sunday School office worker, and a member of the Board of Directors of Bethel Christian Academy. He visited Honduras on five occasions with a missionary team. Don enjoyed fly fishing, fly-tying, and bow hunting. He was a United States Air Force veteran serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Reba Frady McCracken of the Bethel Community; two sons, Joel McCracken and his wife, Sarah Jane, of Cowpens, SC and Gary McCracken of Asheville; two daughters, Kathy McCracken of Maggie Valley and Jeanne Carver and her husband, Michael, of Canton; two sisters, Joan Garland of the Bethel Community and Jackie Liner of Hendersonville; two brothers, Reverend Larry McCracken of Lenoir and Neal McCracken of Canton; four grandchildren, Jessica and Brent McCracken and Megan and Jon Michael Carver. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at Bethel Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Larry McCracken officiating. Deacons of the church will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home.
