Waynesville, Dr. Donald Shell was born March 1, 1924. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII. He earned his PhD in mathematics and worked as an executive for General Electric's Computer Division. He wrote the Shell Sort Program and made substantial contributions to the creation of the internet. He was very active in the United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of the Good News and the Christian Lay Ministries. He passed away on November 2, 2015 and is survived by his loving wife, Helen, 1 brother, 1 sister, 2 sons, 2 stepsons, 3 stepdaughters, 17 grandchildren, their spouses, and 33 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Charles W. "Chuck" Wilson, II, Reverend Tim McConnell and Reverend Dr. James V. Heidinger, II officiating.
