Doris Brookshire

Doris Viola Lawing Brookshire, 86, of Waynesville joined her heavenly family on June 21, 2021, at Pisgah Valley Retirement Community in Candler, NC.

Doris was born and raised in Asheville, NC.  She was the daughter of the late James and Allie Lawing.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn F. Brookshire; daughters, Beth Turner and Carol Brookshire; and four siblings.

As a homemaker, Doris raised six children plus helped raise her grandchildren.  She opened her home to many other children as a “Nanny”.  She worked many years in childcare.  She loved walking through the woods looking for wildflowers and plants, working in her yard, camping, swimming, and going to the beach.   In her later years, Doris found a passion for making pottery by hand.  Her fondest memories were growing up in Asheville playing basketball at Sandhill School and hanging out with childhood friends.  Doris’ memories and thoughts of her family were her most valued treasures.

Doris is survived by her four children, Brenda Mehaffey (Steve), Vickey Lanning (Jim), Greg Brookshire and Jennifer Mabry (Jason); nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
