Doris Burrell

Doris Burnette Burrell, 83, died on August 6, 2013. She was born on September 12, 1929 and was preceded in death by her parents William "Joe" Lawrence Burnette and Lillian Trantham Burnette. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Clarence W. Burrell; her four children, William "Randy" Burrell & wife Brona of Asheville, Jeffrey Burrell & wife Lori of Raleigh, David Burrell & wife Melissa of Maggie Valley and Sharon Candler & husband Angelo of Benson; her brother William "Bill" Burnette of Asheville; her 11 grandchildren, Scott & wife Christina, Ashley & husband Adam, Sean & wife Rachel (Sylvia Williams, mother of Scott, Ashley & Sean), Boyd, Bailey, Tricia & husband Paul, Matthew, Kayla & husband Matthew, Hannah, Leman, and Misty & husband Sean; and her 11 great grandchildren, Austin, Addison, Liam, Seth, Chance, Tristan, Dominic, McKenna, Leman, Arabella and Ellianna. Mrs. Burrell lived to serve God and others. She was actively involved in her home church, New Covenant, in Clyde, NC. As a tireless servant, she spent herself in the volunteer services of many organizations and Christian ministries. She served her country as a pilot with the Civil Air Patrol during WWII; was a board member of the Salvation Army; a long-time volunteer with the American Red Cross serving NC, SC & GA; a District President with the American Legion; a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts; volunteer with Girl Scouts and with the Boy Scouts of America, in which she was the 1989 recipient of the Walter Damtoft Award in appreciation of many years of unselfish devotion and distinguished service in promoting the scouting program in the Pigeon River District and the Daniel Boone Council. Moreover, she gave herself wholeheartedly, and for many years, to the ministries of Lay Witness Mission, Hospice, prison and jail evangelistic outreach, Wycliffe Bible Society, The Gideons International, Christian Believers Union; and; most importantly, to the ministry of prayer and intercession, through which she positively impacted innumerable lives for the cause of Christ. In 1968 she concluded many years as a substitute teacher, when she went to work with the Waynesville Mountaineer as a journalist. She remained there for 22 years until her retirement. Doris Burrell's life was the personifying of the biblical prescripts, "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength;" and, "love your neighbor as yourself." Her legacy, as confirmed by the countless testimonies of those who came within the scope of her influence, was the practical and relational living out of these commands. She is at home now with the One in whose named she rendered her service, the Lord Jesus Christ. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at New Covenant Church in Clyde with Pastor Nick Honerkamp and her son, Jeff Burrell officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.
