Doris Hemphill

Canton-Doris Maida Wood Hemphill, age 85, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Hattie Robinson Wood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Hemphill who died in 2003. Doris retired from the Town of Canton as a School Crossing Guard. She was a member of Sonoma Easter Star for 58 years, taught the beginners Sunday school class for many years at Canton First Baptist, where she was a member for 64 years. Doris was an avid Bridge player. She was survived by a daughter, Karol Hemphill and her husband, Jerry L. Leatherwood, Jr., of Little Rock, Arkansas; a son, Charles Ray Hemphill, Jr. and his wife Diane Reed Hemphill, of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, John Douglas Leatherwood of Little Rock, Arkansas and Kara Hemphill Weyhenneyers of Denver, NC; other family members, Tiffany and Scott St. John of Charlotte, NC and Maxine and Carroll Kinsland; four nieces and 3 nephews. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Crawford/ Ray Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Jay Meadows officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
