Maggie Valley, NC - Doris Mae Scofield, age 94, of Crestwood Drive, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Born in Hasting, Florida on October 13, 1916, she was the daughter of the late C.W. McCullough, Sr. and Annie Minshew McCullough. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil G. Scofield, who died in 1991; one sister, Vera Guard; and one brother, C.W. "Mac" McCullough. At age seven, when her mother passed away, she moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida where she grew up and later married Virgil Scofield on June 23, 1940. She was employed at Ropers Bakery and Delicatessen in New Smyrna Beach while her husband managed Lovett's Grocery. In later years, they lived on North Glenco Road while working at the Tropical Blossom in Edgewater, Florida for their dear friends, Dave and Helen. Maggie Valley was home for Doris for the past eleven years. She is survived by her sons, Retired Command Sergeant Major William A. Scofield, of Germany and Frank F. Scofield of Maggie Valley, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Melanie Lewis, of Maggie Valley and Frank Scofield, Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; two great grandchildren; and niece and nephew, Barbara Gillis, of Ft. Pierce, Florida and Curtis Guard, of Vero Beach, Florida. Graveside services will be held at Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
