Waynesville, Dorothy Haddon Karwisch was born in Morrison, Tennessee to Myrtle and Ben Haddon. Her siblings, who predeceased her, were Georgianna, Margaret and Ben. She graduated from Girls' High School in Atlanta, Georgia and initially worked for Davidson's Department Store. She married Alfred B. Karwisch, Jr. of Atlanta, in 1941. During the war years she did secretarial work and served as a nurse's aide. Following the war she started a family and went to work for Atlantic Steel Company. She raised two daughters and, after thirty-six years, retired from Atlantic Steel as Head Purchasing Agent. She then did accounting and secretarial work for two travel agencies. As an added benefit she was able to do extensive traveling, fulfilling a childhood dream. She was a long-time member of Atlanta First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and participated with the Hemphill Bible Class. Since moving to Waynesville, NC, she has been a member of Waynesville First United Methodist Church and supported its prayer shawl ministry. She is survived by two daughters, Mary K. Thomas and Pat K. Stone of Waynesville, two grandchildren, Christina S. Kent of Colorado Springs and Edward Stone, Jr. of Atlanta, and extended family in Tennessee and Georgia. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2013 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. and Reverend L. Wilson Strickhausen officiating. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.
