Doug Grasty

Douglas Edward Grasty, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, was born on March 2, 1954, in Haywood County. He passed away peacefully at his home on September 9, 2024, surrounded by family.

Doug dedicated 38 years to the Town of Waynesville, where he contributed significantly to the community as the Superintendent of Water and Sewer, retiring in 2014. His commitment to his work was deeply valued, and he was known for being a reliable and hardworking individual, embodying the true spirit of service.

A graduate of Tuscola High School in 1973, Doug carried a lifelong passion for learning and growth. He was a man of many interests and skills, often found canning and gardening, pursuits that brought him joy and a sense of accomplishment. He loved to fish with his grandchildren, creating treasured memories, and was an avid hunter. Doug's love for bluegrass music was a reflection of his down-to-earth nature and the joy he found in life’s simple pleasures.

Doug's family was his greatest treasure. He was married to JoAnn Hickman Grasty for 51 years, and together they nurtured a loving home filled with laughter and support. He leaves behind three daughters: Lisa Frazier (Brett), Sarah Markley (John), and Laura Grasty (David Dennison), who carry forward his legacy of love. Doug was also proud of his nine grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He is survived by his brother, Mike Grasty.

He is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Grasty; mother, Annie Mae Sutton; son, Andrew Grasty; and sister, Connie Osborne. Doug's memory will forever be cherished by his extensive family and friends who admired his loving spirit and unwavering kindness.

Doug Grasty will be remembered as the salt of the earth, whose life was a testament to the importance of family, work, and the joy found in everyday moments. His warmth, humor, and love will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
