Douglas Messer

Douglas "Wayne" Wainwright Messer, age 65, died on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the Charles George VA Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Wilburn and Susan Harvey Messer. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Wade and Hugh Stanley Messer. He was employed with BASF for more than 30 years. Wayne was an outdoorsman extraordinaire, enjoyed NASCAR, loved history, especially local history, and was an amateur genealogist. He would help anyone with a need, loved his family, and was a father to many children in the area. He was a member of the Army National Guard 211th MP Company out of Clyde serving in Vietnam and Desert Storm. He is survived by three sons, Douglas Dwayne Messer, Daniel Michael Molina, and Jesse James Clark; two daughters, Tracy Messer Brown and Julia Marie Molina; two sisters, Betty Taylor and Louella W. Stringfellow; a brother, James Ray Messer; 11 grandchildren, a great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews, and three aunts, Annie Messer White, Bonnie Messer Ball, and Mildred R. Zimmerman. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 2011, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend James R. Burress officiating. Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 11th at the State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 89, P. O. Box 331, Canton, NC 28716 or to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
