Douglas Ward

Waynesville, Douglas Lee Ward, age 46, of 54 Christine Court, died unexpectedly on Saturday at his residence. A native of Hendersonville, he was raised in Andrews and had resided in Haywood County for the past 24 years. He was the son of Samuel Edison and Mildred Gates Ward of Andrews. He was a 1979 graduate of Andrews High School and received his BA Degree in Business Administration from Appalachian State University in 1983 and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He then received his Masters Degree from Western Carolina University and was in the process of writing his dissertation towards his PhD Degree. Doug was a former loan officer at Haywood Savings and Loan. He then became an instructor at Southwestern Community College in 1997 and at the time of his death, was the Accounting Program Coordinator and instructor in Accounting and Business Administration. He had recently been elected president of the Faculty Senate at Southwestern Community College for the upcoming school year. He was also a member of the Advisory Board of the State Employees Credit Union and was a Mason and member of the Andrews Masonic Lodge 529 and the NC Shrine. He was a member of Longs Chapel United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of three years, Jaimi Ann Martens Ward; a daughter, Charlotte Ward; three stepchildren, Cade, Adam, and Megan Holsey; and mother and father-in-law, Ronald W. and Phyllis J. Martens, of Waynesville. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Longs Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Charles W. Wilson, Reverend Alan Mears, and Reverend Jennings Sizemore officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 13, at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville beginning at 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Southwestern Community College Foundation, 447 College Drive, Sylva, NC 28779.
