Waynesville-Dr. Thomas Edward "Ted" Howell, age 58, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at Duke University Medical Center. He was born in St. Augustine, Florida, and was the son of the late Matt Denmark Howell and Edith Morgan Howell. After moving, as a youth, with his family from Winston-Salem to Waynesville, Ted graduated in 1964 from Waynesville Township High School and then from Davidson College and UNC School of Dentistry. After serving in the US Navy Dental Corp, Ted began private dental practice in Waynesville, then moved his family to Nashville, TN for five years and back to Waynesville where he continued to practice dentistry until the onset of his leukemia in July. Ted was active in many organizations, but his time was concentrated in the dental society, Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, tree farming, golf, and running. He was a member and past president of the Waynesville Rotary Club and was instrumental in securing grant monies for Andean Rural Health, a water and environmental assistance effort in Bolivia. Surviving in addition to his wife of 37 years, Nancy Sale Howell, are his three children and their spouses, Morgan and Michael Moylan of Hillsborough, Thomas and Natalie Henry Howell of the Ironduff Community, and Matt-Sale and Ann Davis Howell of Hillsborough; a brother, John Howell and his wife, Jean; two sisters, Becky H. Prevost of Waynesville and Susan H. Gallion and her husband, Bob, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is also survived by his stepmother, Ruth Robeson Kirkpatrick Howell, of Waynesville as well as two stepbrothers, J. Weaver Kirkpatrick and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesville and Robbie Kirkpartick and his wife, Beverly, of Asheville; and seven grandchildren. A celebration of Ted's Life and Faith will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Robert E. Fuquay, Jr. and Reverend Woody Adams officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2005 at Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Waynesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Long's Chapel UMC, P.O.
