Dr. Hurd

Clyde, Dr. Douglas Burdett Hurd, D.O., F.A.C.O.S., age, 82 of 126 Celebration Cove, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2013. Born November 9, 1930 in Hornell, NY, he was the son of the late Harry Burdett and Kathern Irene Besaw Hurd. Doug graduated from Lowville Free Academy in Lowville, NY in 1948; received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY in 1952 and received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree from Chicago College of Osteopathy at Chicago, IL in 1956. He did his internship at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital in Detroit, MI from 1956 to 1957, his residency in General Surgery at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital from 1957 to 1960 and obtained his preceptorship in Urological Surgery from Alan W. Morgan, D.O. and Reed M. Nesbitt, M.D. in 1963. Doug was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Social Fraternity, Beta Beta Beta Honorary Biology Fraternity, Sigma Sigma Phi National Osteopathic Honorary Society Fraternity and Atlas Club Social Fraternity. His practice included Urological Surgeon, Detroit Urology Clinic, P.C., Detroit, MI and Urological Surgeon, Rochester Urology Clinic, P. C., Rochester, Mi from 1963 until 1990, Medical Director, Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital, Pontiac, MI from 1990 until 1996. Dr. Hurd retired from practice in 1996. Dr. Hurd was a member of American Osteopathic Association, Michigan Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, Wayne County Association of Osteopathic Physicians, Oakland County Association of Osteopathic Physicians, Michigan State University-College of Osteopathic Medicine, Associate Clinical Professor of Osteopathic Medicine. He had been member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons since 1964, serving on the Editorial Committee and Ethics Committee. He received the Honorary Degree of Fellow in 1973, was Chairman of Urological Surgery Section and Recipient of the C. Condie Call Award in 1985. Dr. Hurd was recommended by Board of Governors for appointment as Consultant and Member of American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and Professional/Technical Peer Review Group for Osteopathic Physicians, Michigan Department of Social Services appointed by the Governor in 1975. Doug also was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Detroit Area Council, Masonic Organizations, member of Stoney Creek Lodge #5, AF&AM, Moslem Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Detroit, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Rochester Shrine Club 33 degree, member and Past-Patron (x2), Order of the Eastern Star, charter member, Moslem Shrine Temple Newsboys Club, DeMolay Charter member, Lowville, N.Y., 1947 and was awarded The DeMolay Legion of Honor in 1980. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Barbara Claire Snyder, three daughters, Teri L. Horn and Shawn D. Vaitkus of Clyde, NC; Kelly C. Allen of Haslett, MI; two sons, Scott B. Hurd of Riverdale, GA and Brent C. Hurd of Warren, MI; one sister Barbara A. Andrianos of Jordan, NY; one brother, Gerald A. Hurd of Margate, FL; 7 grandchildren, Keith C. Hurd, Hazel Park, MI; Gena M. Froehlich of Atlanta, GA; Anthony J. Froehlich of Fayetteville, GA; Sarah M. Foehlich of Atlanta, GA; Kinsey C. Vaitkus of Clyde, NC; Ryan D. Allen and Cezanne C. Allen, Haslett of MI. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday May 3, 2013 at St. Andrews on the Hill Episcopal Church. Father Timothy McRee, Father Harlie Bemis and Dr. Russell Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
