Lake Junaluska-Dr. Mack Slagle Setser, age 85, of 44 Huckleberry Lane, died on Monday, June 20, 2005. He was born in Franklin, NC on January 6, 1920 and was a dedicated son to his belated parents, Joe and Harriet Setser. Surviving Dr. Setser is his wife of 60 years, Beulah McMurray Setser; daughter Vicky Setser Hinkley and husband, Randy Hinkley, of Lake Junaluska; son Hal William Setser and wife, Suzy Setser, of Wingate NC; granddaughter, Jill Hinkley Barker, and husband, Bill Barker, of Lake Junaluska; grandson Clayton Williams Setser, of Wingate, NC; great-granddaughter Kennedy Victoria Barker, of Lake Junaluska. Mack is also survived by sisters, Margaret Setser Ramsey of Franklin, NC and Jane Setser Wells of Salisbury, NC. In addition to his parents, Mack was preceded in death by brothers George Setser, Tom Setser, and sister, Mary Jo Setser Sloan. Dr. Setser was a graduate of Franklin High School, NC State University, and the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. He served his country in the US Marine Corps during World War II and obtained the rank of Major. He established and owned the Junaluska Animal Hospital where he practiced veterinary medicine until his retirement. Mack was very active in his profession as a veterinarian. He served on the committee which established the School of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University in Raleigh. He was selected by his peers as NC Veterinarian of the Year and was a past president of the NC Veterinary Medical Association. He also was a member and served as chairman of the Junaluska Sanitary District. Dr. Setser loved Haywood County and served his community in many ways. He was the Chairman of the Haywood County School Board during consolidation of Pisgah and Tuscola High Schools and was instrumental in the founding of Haywood Community College. Dr. Setser was an active member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and was a member of the Tullis Sunday-School Class. Mack was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished his entire family and was blessed to have had so many friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Longs Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Robert E. Fuquay, Jr. and Reverend Woody Adams officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. At other times, the family will be at the residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Long's Chapel United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 459, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745 or to Haywood County Schools Foundation, 1230 N. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
