Dr. Spencer

Dr. Austin Harvey Spencer, age 72, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2011, at Mission Hospital. A native of East Aurora, New York, he was the son of the late Leon and Ruth Green Spencer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother. Dr. Spencer was Professor of Finance and Banking at Western Carolina University for 30 years. He also taught in the Netherlands, Turkey, and Egypt and was the author of two widely used textbooks in bank management. He attended Central United Methodist Church of Asheville. Dr. Spencer enjoyed traveling, hiking, and his German Shepherd, Schon. As a youth, he ministered and provided essential needs to migrant workers in Ohio and Florida. He was also a volunteer at Mission Hospital. Austin will forever have a special place in his heart for his hometown, East Aurora, New York. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Central United Methodist Church of Asheville with the Reverend Rob Blackburn officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
