Dr. Stephen “Steve” Lawrence Pohl, MD, 83, of Biltmore Lake passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at Mission Hospital. A native of Miles City, Montana, he was the son of the late Loren F. and Helen Stephens Pohl. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Brian Pohl in 2020 and brother, William F. Pohl.
Dr. Pohl earned his BA at Harvard University and went on to receive his doctorate at Western Reserve University in 1966. During his career, he was employed by Tufts University (1972-1975), and University of Virginia (1975-1987) before founding his private practice, Kentucky Diabetes Endocrinology Center in 1987. In 1994, his research participation in the discovery of G-Proteins resulted in a Nobel Prize awarded to Martin Rodbell. He remained in practice of his specialty, Endocrinology, the treatment of diabetes mellitus, until he retired in 2007.
Over the years, he along with Linda and the family resided in Cleveland, OH, Bethesda, MD, St. Louis, MO, Lexington, MA, Charlottesville, VA, and Lexington, KY until his retirement to Asheville, NC. He obtained his pilot license and enjoyed owning his own plane. He also was a thoroughbred racehorse owner which included being a shareholder in multiple graded stakes winner, Cashiers Dream.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda Gail Blaser Pohl; son, Patrick Pohl and his wife, Mary of Biltmore Lake; Daughter-in-law, Jalene Bowersmith of Durham, NC and grandchildren, Charlene, Margaret, and Brendan.
Due to Hurricane Helene, Dr. Pohl's memorial service has been postponed for the foreseeable future. Updated information will be provided, once rescheduled. Private entombment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
The care of Dr. Pohl has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler and an online memorial register is available on the funeral home website.
