Earl Caldwell

April 18, 1931 — October 14, 2014

Clyde, Earl Hascue Caldwell, age 83, of Terrell Road, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Matt Roe and Margie McClure Caldwell. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, John Earl Caldwell, and three sisters, Bobbie Curtis, Vivian Summey and Faustina Johnson. In 1947, when he was only 16 years old, Earl joined the US Air Force, and served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He retired as Senior Master Sergeant after 27 years of service having earned many honors including the Air Force Commendation Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 47 and life member of VFW Post 5202 where he served as Post Commander and Quarter Master, as well as District 17th Commander. He served forty years with the VFW/American Legion Honor Guard for military funerals. When not serving his country and fellow veterans, he enjoyed gardening and his beautiful family. Earl is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Jean Caldwell; three daughters, Sue Jalm and husband, Terry, of Jupiter, Florida, Cindy Nichols and her husband, Therold, and Jean Caldwell, all of Clyde; two sons, Chuck Caldwell and his wife, Christie, of King George, Virginia, and David Caldwell of Clyde; six grandchildren, Kristin and Megan Jalm, Cameron and Chandler Caldwell, and Kristen and Michael Nichols. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at Fincher's Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a life-long member. Reverend Curran Welch and Reverend Katherine Craine will be officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O.
