Candler, Earl William Cook, age 78, formerly of Waynesville, passed away on Wednesday, June 30 at Pisgah Manor Nursing Home. He was born and lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Perry Herman and Alcie Henson Cook and was also preceded in death by one sister, Marie Steppleton. Earl was a self-employed carpenter/contractor, who touched the lives of many through his quality craftsmanship. He was a member of New Hope Church of God and was instrumental in its construction, as well as its street name. He enjoyed the simple things in life, such as hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes, and was a master with a slingshot. Earl was extremely dedicated to his work and was known for his integrity and honesty. Earl was a dedicated Christian and very devoted to his family. His children and grandchildren were the apple of his eye. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Zanie Mae Kilby Cook; two sons, Keith Cook and his wife, Karen, of Waynesville and Kenneth Cook and his wife, Cynthia, of Candler; one daughter, Debbie Griffin and her husband, Wayne, of Salem, Virginia; three sisters, Edith Cooke and her husband, Ray, Martha Mease and her husband, Junior, and Ruby Gibson and her husband, Hillary, all of Canton; one brother, Guy Cook and his wife, Geraldine, of Canton; seven grandchildren, Lorri Reece and her husband, Branson, Amanda Jones, Aubrey Cooper and her husband, Gavin, Justin Cook and his wife, Emily, Jessica Cook and Noah and Jonah Cook; four great grandchildren, Bailey and Gabbie Reece, and Abigail and Savannah Jones; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at New Hope Church of God with Reverend Melvin Shuler officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with military honors conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion 47. Serving as pallbearers will be Ronnie and Sammy Kilby, Justin Cook, Branson Reece, Dennis Maney, and Ricky Gibson. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, and at other times, at the home of Zanie Cook.
