Earl Gribble

October 19, 1921 — March 2, 2009

Greenville, SC, Earl Robert Gribble, 87, of Greenville, formerly of Waynesville, N.C., died on Monday, March 2 at McCall Hospice House. He was born in Towns County Georgia in 1921, son of the late Ralph S. Gribble and Georgia Ledford Gribble. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Maness Gribble, and a son, Rondal Gribble. As a longtime resident of Waynesville, N.C., he was active in several civic organizations and Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains. He was a member of Waynesville Country Club and the Waynesville Golf Club. He was a combat veteran of the United States Third Army. During World War II, he served under General George Patton in several key battles in the march across Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. When he returned home from the war, he was employed at Pet Dairy for 33 years and retired as General Manager of the Waynesville processing facility. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Gribble York, and her husband, Bonner York of Greenville, SC; a son, Michael Gribble and his wife Bobbie Gribble of Peachtree City, GA; three grandchildren: Vicky Gribble, of Waynesville, NC; Kristi York Wooten and her husband Tim Wooten of Atlanta, GA; Alan York and his wife Laura York, of Little Rock, AR; and two great-grandchildren: Audrey Wooten and Lillie York. He is also survived by his sisters, Edith L. Mull and Lucille L. Mull, of Hiawassee, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains in Waynesville, NC. Committal will follow at Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials be made to the Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Garden Fund, 394 Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
