Maggie Valley, Earl Avett Ledford, 83, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Mission Hospital surrounded by his family. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Samuel Milas and Margaret Matilda Rathbone Ledford. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. Earl served as a flight instructor in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict earning the rank of sergeant. His selfless service continued in his civilian life where he served as a volunteer faithfully for the Maggie Valley Fire Department. Earl owned and operated Teague's Superette Campground and Service Station as well as the Water Wheel Gallery. He had the capacity to build or fix anything with his hands. Earl's selfless nature and giving spirit blessed countless families, friends and strangers throughout his life. Earl enjoyed traveling with Eva after retirement. They especially loved spending time in the cabin he built in the woods of Haywood County. This cabin served as the gathering place for his entire family. Earl's greatest treasure in life was his precious family with whom he loved to spend time. Earl is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Eva Mae Ledford; two daughters, Shelia and Denise; two sons, Mike and Doug; a daughter-in-law, Cathy; two sisters, Lucy and Virginia; one brother J.C. and his wife, Bonnie all of Waynesville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Dellwood Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Rogers, Pastor Doug Sherrill, Pastor Barry Willett and Dan Messer officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the church. Entombment will follow at Garrett Hillcrest Mausoleum.
