Candler, Earl Alexander Whisenhunt, age 95, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at the N.C. State Veterans Home in Black Mountain. Earl was from Candler, North Carolina and was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Gretchen Shepherd, who died March 30, 2013. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Dick Whisenhunt. During World War II, Earl served as a Squad Leader with the Combat Infantry as a paratrooper with the 517th. He served his country in Rome – Arno, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He is credited with 17 jumps during that time. After the war he married his wife, Nell, and they moved to California, where Earl was a master electrician. After retiring Earl and his wife, Nell, moved back to North Carolina and settled in Candler, until their deaths. The two had no children, however he is survived by his sister Louise Lane who is 99, and lives in Hazelwood, North Carolina. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Green Hill Cemetery with military rites being conducted by Haywood County Honor Guard. Family and friends are invited to meet at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville at 10:30 a.m. and then go to the gravesite together at 11:00 am.
