Ed Smith

Waynesville, Edwin C. "Ed" Smith, age 81, of 450 Chambers Road, died on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at his residence. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Leonard Carol and Lucy Jane Burnette Smith. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Dot Ford. Ed retired from Champion Papers as a lab technician in 1994 after 40 years service. He was director/manager of the Foggy Mountain Cloggers and a member of Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian Watson Smith; one daughter, Evelyn Green and her husband, Carl, of Waynesville; four sons, David E. Smith and his wife, Libby, and Danny E. Smith and his wife, Shirley, all of Asheville, Jim Smith and his wife, Leslie, of Clyde, and Richard Smith and his wife, Cathy, of Washington, DC; two sisters, Pat Conard and her husband, Bob, and Mary Ann Cagle and her husband, Doyle, all of Waynesville; four brothers, Robert L. Smith and his wife, Alfie, and John Smith and his wife, Betty, all of Waynesville, Joe Smith and his wife, Wilma, of Lake Junaluska, and Ben Smith and his wife, Linda, of Asheville; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Jim Mackey and Reverend Claude Conard officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
