Edgar Read

Edgar Allan Read, 79, of Hendersonville went to be with his Lord at sunrise the morning of April 6, 2020, at the Lodge at Mills River. A native of Teaneck, NJ, he was the son of the late Bernard Read and Grace Read Matthews.  In additional to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Read, a son, Mark Andrew Read and a grandson, Luke Alexander Kegley.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and had many interesting stories to tell while he was out at sea or while being docked in other countries. Following his military service, Ed was an Engineer and Architect, working in many states prior to his retirement.  He liked to spend time deer hunting, fishing, and traveling, and had many other interests.

Once Ed moved south, he became a southerner at heart. Ed was a long-time member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Fellowship and during his late 40’s went back to school at Toccoa Falls College. For several years, he attended Union Hills Holiness Baptist Church but most of all he loved serving the Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years and 8 months, Linda Shuford Read; son, Phillip Read and his wife, Justine; daughter, Carolina Thomas and her husband, Ricky, Rebecca Siriwardene and her husband, Tony; sister, Grace Read; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter and several nieces and a nephew.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Richard Smith and Rev. Douglas Carroll officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 1 Chapel of Faith Drive, Candler, NC.  Military honors will be provided by the US Naval Honors team.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a Charity of one’s choice or Union Hill Holiness Baptist Church fellowship hall building fund, 1141 Union Hill Road, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
