Edith Rhodes

Edith Newman Rhodes, age 96, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, November 14, 2006, after a short period of declining health. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, and was born on August 21, 1910, to the late Fred and Sarah Harris Newman. She was also preceded in death by her cherished husband, Harley Rhodes, Sr., two sisters, Evelyn Clark and Ersie Allen; and two brothers, Jim and Ernest Newman. Mrs. Rhodes was a homemaker, and a loving, kind, and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a member of West Canton Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters, Omajean Hoyt of Pasadena, MD, Bobbie Gibson of Canton, and Betty Jo Best and her husband, Autry, of Clyde; four sons, Harley Rhodes, Jr., and his wife, Bobbie Alice, of Canton, Jack Rhodes and his wife, Louise, of Canton, Bill Newman Rhodes and his wife, Yvonne, of Greenville, SC, and James Rhodes of Canton; two sisters, Kayte Hamlett of Canton and Hilda Boone of Clyde; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A celebration of Mrs. Rhodes life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2006, at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Steve Gibson, Tommy Gibson, William Newman Rhodes, II, Thomas Gibson, Jr., Justin Clinard, Jody Glance, Roger Edwards, Tuelly Fenner, and Kirk Wong In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Canton Baptist Church New Building Fund, 75 Lowe Street, Canton, NC 28716.
