Canton - Edith Lindler Thompson, age 88, of 1006 Dutch Cove Road died Friday, March 25, 2005 at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals.<br><br>She was the last of nine children born to Joseph Gatling Lindler and Betty Alberta Miller and was the wife of the late Joseph S. Thompson, Jr. who died October 12, 1996. Her brothers and sisters who preceded her in death were; Otis, Joe, Ben, Pink, Woodrow and Sara "Teenie" Lindler, Matybel Cobb and Rubye Zimmerman. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church.<br><br>Mrs. Thompson was born and grew up in Saluda, South Carolina. She attended Saluda High School and was graduated in the spring of 1934. The following fall she began studies at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. In the fall of 1936, she entered the nursing program at Spartanburg General Hospital. Three years later she became a registered nurse and began in her professional career at Providence Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. It was in Spartanburg where she was doing private duty nursing that she met her future husband, Joe. They were married on August 5, 1942. When he returned from an overseas tour of duty, they moved to Canton, North Carolina. In 1949, she began her tenure of twenty-two years in obstetrical nursing at Haywood County Hospital, where she touched the lives of many families. She finished her professional career and retired as an industrial nurse at Champion International in 1976.<br><br>During her lifetime, Edith was involved in many roles. To her family in South Carolina, she was affectionately known as "EdieKey". In her professional, she was amusingly referred to as "Sadie"' and to her children and grandchildren, she was lovingly called Mother, Grandmother, and "Mommo".<br><br>She is survived by three daughters; Linda T. Snakenberg Masters and her husband David of Canton, Barbara T. Smathers of Lawrence, Kansas and Betty T. Wobker and her husband Larry of Clemmons, NC, one son Joseph Samuel Thompson, III and his wife Robin of Stone Mountain, Georgia, 6 grandchildren; Robert Lucian Snakenberg, III, Joseph Fleetwood "Josh" Smathers, III, Lawrence Joseph Wobker, Sara Elizabeth Wobker, Amelia Smathers Buller and Katherine Lindler Thompson and one great-grandson Nathan Joseph Buller.<br><br>Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. Reverend Carrol Lindsey and Reverend Dr. David S. Melton will officiate. Burial will follow at Locust Field Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 28th at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Christopher Melton, Neal Lipham, Tommy Pope, Andy Buller, Joseph Smathers and Dan Kelly. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Dr. E. H. Stines, Dr. Albert P. Cline, Jr., George Price, Bob Phillips, Paul Rogers and J. Patrick Greeley. <br><br>Memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC or to Canton Central United Methodist Church, 34 Church Street, Canton, NC 28716. <br>
