Waynesville, Mrs. Edna Merritt Boineau, age 95, formally of 63 Meadow Street, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Haywood Lodge and Retirement Center. She and her husband called Haywood Lodge "home" for some ten plus years. Edna was born in Clinton, North Carolina to Herman Stewart and Jenny Best Merritt. She graduated from Clinton High School, moved to Fayetteville and worked as a Credit Manager for Sears-Roebuck for several years. In Fayetteville she met her soon-to-be husband, Glenn Boineau, Jr. and they shared 62 happy years before his death in 2014. They lived in many states during his employment with the VA Hospital System and settled in Waynesville in 1988, Glenn's hometown, after his retirement. Edna was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Waynesville where she served in numerous positions. She was a talented pianist and served as a volunteer on Wednesdays at the church. She often made comments about her visits with the pastor to the local Nursing Homes. She had played for many services at Haywood Lodge and Retirement Center before becoming a resident herself. In addition to her husband and parents, Edna was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Merritt Blackman, a brother-in-law, Eugene M. Blackwood and a brother, Herman S. Merritt, Jr. who was killed in action during World War II. She is survived by her cousins, Jeanne B. Pope, Glenn T. Pope, Charles E. Pope, Jr. and wife, Amanda, and Kathy Pope Peterson and husband, Jeff, although she was always affectionately called "Aunt Edna" by Jeanne's children. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mildred Summerrow and her sons, Lawson and David. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Wilson Strickhausen officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Inurnment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Western Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
