Asheville - Edna DeLott Kwass, 103, passed away peacefully at Deerfield Retirement Community in Asheville, NC, on September 27, 2014. Edna was born in New York City on June 23, 1911, to Frances Pois DeLott and Samuel DeLott. Growing up, she lived and worked in New York City and in Coral Gables and Miami, Florida. She attended the University of Miami, New York University and trained in classical ballet at the Metropolitan Opera School of Ballet. She and her family moved to Bluefield, West Virginia where she opened her own ballet studio and eventually met and married her husband of 65 years, Sidney J. Kwass, a prominent attorney and appellate judge. As a patron of the arts, Mrs. Kwass was an active supporter of many organizations which involved the musical world. She volunteered at St Luke's Hospital in Bluefield, participated in a variety of community activities and served as president of the Sisterhood at Temple Ahavath Shalom, where she remained a member until her death. The Kwasses retired to Boca Raton, Florida where Mrs. Kwass lived at St. Andrews Retirement Community until moving to North Carolina in 2010 to be near family. Mrs. Kwass was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Sidney, in 1998, and sister, Blanche Meyers. She is survived by her three children: Robert Kwass and wife, Loretta, of Lighthouse Point, FL; Karel Copenhaver of Augusta, GA; and Kathy Gross and husband, Charles, of Waynesville, NC; four grandchildren: Eve Estroff Turner and Brian Estroff (Heidi) of Augusta, GA; Eric Estroff (Dianne) of Marietta, GA; and Robert Taylor (Zivile) of Studio City, CA; in addition to seven great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m.on Saturday, October 12, 2014 at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in celebration of her life. Burial will be at Monte Vissta Park in Princeton, West Virginia. The family wishes to thank with deep gratitude, the wonderful caregivers and staff at Deerfield Retirement Community as well as special caregivers of Home Instead in Asheville. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
