Edward Hildreth, Jr.

November 24, 1930 — November 9, 2003

Waynesville-Edward C. Hildreth, Jr., age 73, of Lodge Lane, Waynesville, died Sunday, November 9, 2003, at his residence.

A native of the suburban North Shore of Chicago and a 23-year resident of the Clearwater area in Florida, he has lived in Haywood County since 1987.

He was the son of the late Edward C. Hildreth and the late Margaret Owen Hildreth of Evanston, IL, and the great grandson of Philo Carpenter, the first druggist and an early settler of Chicago. Family heritage dates back to Revolutionary fighters and leaders of the community of Savoy, MA.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Owen. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesville and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He retired from Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Corp., Chicago, in 1972, where he was director of editorial services. He was a graduate of Lake Forest Academy (IL) and the University of Alabama. He was a life member of Sigma Delta Chi, Professional Journalistic Society and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Survivors include his sister-in-law Beverly S. Hildreth, of Hazel Crest, IL; and two nephews and a niece.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2003 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Josh Cole officiating. Burial will be in the family plot dating back to 1866 at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
