Edward Samuel Vail passed away June 30th at the age of 85.
He was born and raised in New Jersey and moved to Haywood County in 1999 with his wife. He was an avid fan of car racing, particularly dirt track racing. Ed was an official starter for United Racing Club traveling up and down the east coast for several years. During his later years, he enjoyed having his morning coffee with his buddies at Sorrels Cafe where they would just sit and, as he said, "solve the world's problems." He had an awesome sense of humor and wit and could always make you laugh.
Ed left behind his wife of 53 years, Jessie Mearle Vail. He also left behind a son, Craig Vail of Metairie, Louisiana and a stepson Ron Vail of Santa Clarita, California. Ed was the son of the late Howard and Ruth Vail of New Jersey and was predeceased by a brother, Howard Vail, Jr., two sisters, Lois Rogers and Linda Deckenbeck, all of New Jersey as well as step grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for both Ed and Mearle is scheduled for October 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at Dellwood Baptist Church.
The care of Mr. Vail has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
