Waynesville-Edward Winchester, age 72, of 45 Lanier Lane, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 at his residence after a prolonged illness. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Henry Ralph and Julia Ann Winchester. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and later served in the Naval Reserves from 1956 - 61. He graduated from the National School of Heavy Equipment in 1962. He was employed by Unagusta for 10 years, WNC Paving for 27 years, and later retired from Wellco after 10 years employment. He enjoyed hunting and took a special interest in anything to do with nature. His family was very important to him, and he was a faithful husband, father, and devoted grandfather and attended Faith United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Winchester; a son, Charles Edward Winchester, and his wife, Lesa, of Asheville; two sisters, Laura Simmonds, of Waynesville and Dorothy Miller, of Darien Georgia; a sister-in-law, Carol Webb Winchester, of Waynesville; brother-in-law, Clyde Dills, of North Wilksboro, NC; and two grandchildren, Dusti and Katelyn Winchester. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Terry Rowland officiating. Burial will follow in Fulbright Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be Danny and Joel Dills, Greg Miller, Jimmy Simmonds, Gary Edwards, Gary Glass, Hoyt Barnes, and Larry Rathbone.
