Elden A. Shuford Canton – Elden Alvin Shuford, age 96, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2014. He fought a courageous battle with cancer, and was surrounded by his loving family in his last hours at Smokey Mountain Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Yancy County, he had resided in Haywood County for 67 years. He was the son of the late Daniel Conrad and Alice Chrisawn Shuford. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel Shuford Williams. Elden was a United States Army veteran served during World War II, as a field artillery instructor and instrumental in training the French Army. Elden was a charter member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church of Cruso. He was the chairman of the deacon board for many years. He was a carpenter and stone mason by trade, and built many structures throughout the WNC area. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Vada Davis Shuford and their children; Randall Shuford and his wife Vernell, of Asheville; Riley Shuford and his wife Sandy, of Asheville; David Shuford and his wife Rita Ann, of Fletcher; Rita Shuford Wheeler and her husband, Russell , of Cruso; Leslie Shuford and his wife Sarah; of Clyde; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren and three great- great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2014 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverends, Cameron Bolden, Dale Whitson, Jody Shuford will officiate. Burial will follow at New Cruso Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m Sunday, September 7, 2014. at the funeral home.
