Waynesville-Elizabeth Putnam Shoaf, age 87, died on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Universal Healthcare in Fletcher, NC. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late David Luther and Bertha Free Putnam. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Ray Shoaf, who died in 1977; four sisters, Nell Golden, Mary Putnam, Maude Dennis, and Ruth Campbell; and two brothers, David and Norman Putnam. She was a graduate of Waynesville Township High School and attended Western Carolina University and Haywood Community College in her 60's. She retired from the Haywood County School system as a teacher's assistant and was a member of Allens Creek Home Demonstration Club. Elizabeth was the author of two books, of which one was a local history of Lake Junaluska and several poems. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville for over 55 years where she taught kindergarten Sunday school and was a member of the choir and Circle Nine. She is survived by two daughters, Kem Shoaf, of Anderson, SC and Betty Jackson and her husband, Carl, of Clyde; one sister Jennie P. Miller, of Waynesville; two grandchildren, Tammi Lowe and her husband, Robbie, and Terry Jackson and his wife, Kerri; four great grandchildren, Sam and Adam Jackson and Cody and Chad Lowe; and four step-great grandsons, Parker, Zack, Jordan, and Andrew Dalton. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2007 in the Memorial Chapel at Lake Junaluska with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells and Reverend Kathleen Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
