Canton-Ellen Hargrove Woody, age 85, formerly of 43 Pearl Street, died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.
She was born on September 30, 1918 in Haywood County of which she was a resident all of her life. She was a daughter of the late Jim and Maggie Shook Hargrove of the Bethel Community and was the wife of the late Jack Davis Woody who died in 1992. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Nannie Smathers, Mildred Holbrook and Jimmie Jones, a half-brother, Roy Evans and a half-sister, Lois Kinsland. Ellen retired from the Haywood County Tax Collector's Office and was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the ABC Board. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to all her friends and caregivers at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.
She is survived by one son, Johnny Woody and his wife Martha Brown Woody of Bethel and one grandson, Thad Woody.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Canton Central United Methodist Church with Reverend Carrol Lindsey officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the church parlor prior to the service. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Phil Haire, Tate Haire, Bill Holbrook, Carroll Jones, Rego Jones, Floyd Rogers and Bill Stamey.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Canton Central United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 972, Canton, NC 28716 or to Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Maintenance Fund, 32 Rhoda Street, Canton, NC 28716.
