Ellis Edwin Leatherwood, age 86, died Monday, July 20, 2009, at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. A native resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Walter Ellis and Nettie Medford Leatherwood. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iris King Leatherwood and his second wife, Maude Wiggins Leatherwood; a brother; and three sisters. He retired from American Enka with 35 years of service as a warehouse clerk and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in World War II. Ellis was on Omaha Beach on D-Day with the 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army, "Big Red One". He was the recipient of a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star for his war-time efforts. He was also a member of the VFW Post 3999 in Enka. He is survived by two sons, Jerry Leatherwood and his wife, Darlene, of Swannanoa; Jason Leatherwood of Atlanta; two daughters, Kristi Leatherwood of Athens, GA and Kim Leatherwood of Asheville; a step-daughter, Patsy Lederer and her husband, Mike of Islamorada, FL; a step-son, Russell Robinson and his wife, Brenda, of Clyde; a sister, Terry Dryman of Candler; three grandchildren; Joshua Leatherwood, Emily Simpson, and Shannon Weinberg; a great-granddaughter, Maya Weinberg; two step-granddaughters, Kim Clontz and Mandy Lederer; and three step-great grandchildren, Rustin, Caitlin, and Macy Clontz. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2009, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
