Elmer “Dewayne” Cope, a vibrant soul whose laughter filled the room and whose well-rounded personality endeared him to all, was born on August 28, 1957, in Haywood County. He passed away on January 14, 2025, at Harris Regional Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and unforgettable moments with those he cherished.
Dewayne was a man who never met a stranger; his sociable nature created connections wherever he ventured. Whether sharing a story with friends or making new acquaintances, he had a unique ability to bring people together, fostering a sense of belonging in every interaction. His spirit was infectious, and the joy he spread remains etched in the hearts of many.
He honorably served in the United States Navy, an experience that underscored his commitment to serving others. His time in the military not only instilled in him a sense of discipline but also nurtured friendships that would last a lifetime.
Dewayne is survived by two loving daughters, Layna Cope and Bethany Cope, who carry forward his spirit. Their devotion to him and the lessons he imparted will resonate for generations. He also leaves behind a granddaughter, Kinsley Hopper. His family continued to expand through cherished relationships, including the mother of his children, Deanna Cope, his brother-in-law, Ronnie Fisher, and his niece Shonda Thomas and nephew Nathan Fisher.
Dewayne was reunited in Heaven with his father, Elmer Ell Cope; his mother, Francis Virginia Cope; and his sister, Carolyn Cope Fisher, who welcomed him with open arms.
As we remember Dewayne, we celebrate a life that was richly lived. We find solace in the belief that he lives on through the stories shared, the relationships nurtured, and the lives he touched. His legacy will remain a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date with family and friends per Dewayne’s wishes.
In Lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations in memory of Dewayne to the VA Medical Center.
