Waynesville-Elmer David Hendrix, Sr., age 80, of Lickstone Road, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at his residence.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Swan L. and Allie Cunningham Hendrix. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lula McCracken Hendrix, who died in 1974 and two brothers, Ralph and Oscar Hendrix. He was owner and operator of Smoky Mountain Grocery, which he sold to develop Hendrix Park. In his younger years, he was very active in community and enjoyed farming, hunting, and fishing. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, David Hendrix and his wife, Suzanne, and Michael Hendrix and his wife, Ann, both of Waynesville; a sister, Bonnie Lanning, of Waynesville; a brother, Gordon Hendrix of Waynesville; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2003 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Eddie Dietz and Reverend Carl Presnell officiating. Burial will follow in Buchanan Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service, and at other times, the family will be at the home of David Hendrix, 377 Lickstone Road, Waynesville. Pallbearers will be Aaron and Daniel Hendrix, Adam Smathers, Colton and Roger Parrott, Darryl Gibson, Roy Masters, and Ken McDonald.
